This short documentary (in Japanese) was screened at Roland Hagenberg’s photo exhibition “Kyoto” at the Austrian Embassy, Tokyo, November 8, 2005. 18-year-old Geisha apprentice Toshihana talks about seeing ghosts (the other day a WW2 kamikaze fighter pilot showed up at her bedside). She wants to know, if Austria had also kamikaze pilots (tokkotai). And so she asks the interviewer in English: “Do you tokkotai?” When she was a young girl she admired geishas. They were so beautiful. That’s why she decided to become a geisha herself. “In the beginning it was painful. It is still difficult to go to the toilet. And there is competition and rivalry all around. But it’s all worth it. I am member of the Miyagawa-cho geisha union!”
